Earth & Water Designs was established in southern Vermont in 1999 by Cary and Cindy Lewis. Cary, with a degree in Plant and soil Science and an additional focus on landscape design from the University of Vermont, further expanded his background by managing the UVM greenhouses, working on the grounds and golf course of a high-end Resort Hotel, and honing his hardscaping skills working for a well-respected masonry company. Cindy, who had started gardening at an early age, enjoyed several years growing their business, experience, and family, as well as publishing her book, "Noteworthy Perennials for the Vermont Garden," completing her Certificate in Herbology, starting her side businesses of the "Love Shack Seed Co., "Green Witch Herbal Co.", and garden maintenance. One Earth & Water Designs client, Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home, where Cindy had been contracted to maintain the 100-year-old parterre garden, during which time she also did extensive work developing and identifying their heirloom peonies, would take both of them on full-time to assist with the restoration and enhancement of the gardens and grounds. Several years later, with the restoration complete and the grounds department running smoothly, Cary and Cindy headed north to another gilded-era estate. Once again, they apply their expertise to restore and revitalize the buildings and grounds to their optimal potential and establish a professional program for their continual maintenance. Now, we are back to our roots, Earth & Water, and working in the Vermont landscape.
Garden Design
Meticulous and Comprehensive
Our creative designs tend to lean more toward naturalized plantings. Working with the inherent character of the property already present, creating new focal points of interest and enhancing the beauty of what may already be there.
